Xenia umbellata (Octocorallia): A novel model organism for studying octocoral regeneration ability

چکیده

Climate change is leading to phase shifts in coral reefs worldwide. In many biogeographic regions, octocorals are now becoming the most abundant benthic components, due their environmental resilience and ability rapidly colonize reef surfaces. Regeneration abilities asexual reproduction highly important for this probably contribute successful spread of certain octocorals, including invasive species. Regeneration, however, has been little investigated octocorals. To achieve a deeper understanding octocoral regeneration, we employed Xenia umbellata , common Red Sea, as novel experimental model laboratory studies. Using single-polyp modules, its regeneration polyp (budding). Excised polyps successfully reattached tissue-culture plates within 2-3 days started budding 10 days. Amputation oral disc led full 7-10 days, with continuing throughout period. Moreover, amputated tentacles developed into 21 demonstrating an unusual capacity whole-body regeneration. The species imply high totipotency all parts likely life cycle. Further research using expected enhance ecological molecular development provide insights currently occurring reefs. Our study also suggests that X. potential organism integrative studies on physiology, developmental biology, more, encouraging adoption colonial cnidarian organism.

New cytotoxic xenia diterpenoids from the Formosan soft coral Xenia umbellata.

Seven new cytotoxic xenicane-type diterpenoids, 9-deoxyxeniloide-E (1), 9-deoxy-7,8-epoxyxeniloide-E (2), xeniolide-G (3), 9-deoxyxenialactol-C (4), xenibecin (5), xeniolide-H (6), and xenitacin (7), were isolated from the methylene chloride solubles of the Formosan soft coral Xenia umbellata. The structures were elucidated by 1D and 2D NMR spectral analysis, and their cytotoxicity against sele...

A new alcyonacean octocoral (Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Octocorallia) from Chilean fjords.

A new species, Swiftia comauensis, is described from Chile. It occurs in shallow waters from 18 to 59 m in the Patagonian fjord region and seems to be endemic to the northern part of the region. The species is characterized by having straggly colonies with sparse branching and long drooping branches, prominent polyp mounds, and long, thin spindles; the colonies are bright orange with pale yello...

Candida albicans: A Model Organism for Studying Fungal Pathogens

Candida albicans is an opportunistic human fungal pathogen that causes candidiasis. As healthcare has been improved worldwide, the number of immunocompromised patients has been increased to a greater extent and they are highly susceptible to various pathogenic microbes and C. albicans has been prominent among the fungal pathogens. The complete genome sequence of this pathogen is now available a...

A cryodamage model for studying corneal nerve regeneration.

This study used a transcorneal freezing technique to produce a 2-mm circular, central wound in the rabbit cornea for investigating corneal nerve regeneration. All the corneal cells, nerves, and associated Schwann cells were dead inside the wound, but the extracellular matrix components remained intact. The destroyed epithelium and endothelium were replaced in 1 and 5-7 days, respectively. The n...

A revision of the octocoral genus Ovabunda Alderslade, 2001 (Anthozoa, Octocorallia, Xeniidae)

The family Xeniidae (Octocorallia) constitutes an abundant benthic component on many Indo-West Pacific coral reefs and is ecologically important in the Red Sea. The genus Ovabunda Alderslade, 2001 was recently established to accommodate previous Xenia species with sclerites comprised of a mass of minute corpuscle-shaped microscleres. The aim of the present study was to examine type material of ...
